Bigwin Inn Re-visited After 45 Years - August 7, 2009

BIGWIN INN REVISITED AFTER FORTY-FIVE YEARS (by William McLeod)

Although I don't have a formal "bucket list", if I did, one of the adventures near the top would be a return to Bigwin Island where I worked in the summer of 1964. On August 7, my wife Sheryl and I and another couple spent a very enjoyable couple of hours having lunch in the Marine Room. We, of course, made reservations in advance.

After browsing through the website, I knew the place would be quite different. In the summer of 1964, the resort was beginning a long slide into virtual oblivion. But fortunately, investors with much confidence and very deep pockets, have poured millions into Bigwin's reincarnation. Many of the old landmarks and buildings have been ravaged by step-father time but it's still beautiful.

Arriving at Norway Point we were met at the electronic gate by a pleasant man on a golf cart. He opened the barrier for us and pointed out the parking area which is located near the site of the cottage where the Norway Point staff lived in the "old days". Since I am recovering from hip replacement surgery, I was offered a lift to the dock which has been spiffed up with tile and paving stones. The water taxi whisked us over to the island where another golf cart was waiting to take me up to the beautifully restored Marine Room.

We were quickly seated at what was probably the best table in the house. All of the items on the menu were available and what a lunch we had! The staff has selected an array of wines to suit almost any taste and budget. We men washed our meals down with delightful glasses of house Cabernet Sauvignon. The ladies chose an equally pleasant Pinot Grigio. The desserts were simply sinful.

Our table provided an excellent view of Lake of Bays and the golf course. About half way through lunch, a pair of beautiful full grown deer wandered across the first fairway. We hated to leave.

I can't imagine how any Bigwin staff alumni would not enjoy a trip down memory lane. For reservations, menus and other important information check the website. Google Bigwin Island and click on "Dining".
